Kuro from Samui

The first time I met Kuro was on my second trip to Koh Phangan. I tried not get attached to any dogs, but my boyfriend (he was in there about a month before) was feeding Kuro. Kuro was always hanging around the bangalows where we were staying. (Behind Club Zoom which used to be Vynal.) I found out that Kuro was brought from Samui Island (the next big island) by a foreigner. This person went to Bangkok to earn money and Kuro was left behind.
The dog was all black, so Aaron named him Kuro. In Japanese Kuro means Black so it was easy to remember his name.
He was a pretty skinny dog as always on Koh Phangan. My Thai lady friend, Wip, told us We could give the dog chicken bones. I told her it is not good for the dog, but she said the dogs on the Island can eat bones no problem. Domestic dogs in other countries may have problems with bones because they survive eating soft foods. On the island, all the strays have no choice but to eat what they can get and most of the time it is chicken bones. Which means if the dog isn't strong enough to eat bones, it would not survive there.
Since kuro was hanging around with me, I started to see many things that take place in a dogs life on this Island. The dogs there have very strong territories. Before the dogs get to the end of their territory, they stop as if they can see a wall only known to them. If a dog passes into another dogs territory by mistake or on purpose, it gets in big trouble. It could be very bad for the dog because it almost always ends up in a big fight between the lone dog and all the dogs of the territory it entered. I have seen many dogs fight. I always try to stop them by splashing water on them. It is the best thing to stop the dog fights. Some people try to stop the fight by kicking the dogs. This is not a good idea. If you see a dog fight on the Island, please just splash water on them.
Kuro was always following us around. When I was in the ocean, he would swim after me and always catch up with me. He was a very good swimmer. Oneday, Aaron was snokelling looking at the fish and coral. He was in the water for a very long time before he noticed Kuro had been swimming behind him the entire time. When Aaron finally noticed Kuro, he was so tired he could barely keep his head above water. Aaron carried him back to the beach. I really had a good time with Kuro.
